Reading Slump

After such a great start to the year, reading 8 books in January and then, 7 books in February, I seem to have hit a brick wall. Or something. I’m in a sump. I’ve only finished two books this month, and one of those wasn’t that great a read—FORTY WORDS FOR SORROW. I had hoped the next book, A LIFE TO KILL, would be a much better read and, it was. Up until a point. I was getting absorbed into the story and then? It moved elsewhere and, basically, changed focus. One minute we’re in Afghanistan with British soldiers on patrol, and all hell is breaking loose … and then the focus shifted to the platoon’s base camp back in the UK and the families waiting for their loved one’s return. It was a little jarring, so much so that I didn’t pick the book up for a couple of days and then? I’d lost interest. I tried reading the next chapter but all I wanted to know was what happened to the soldiers. Frustrated. …

Monday Morning Musings

You know what they say the best laid plans of mice and men, hmmm, although the proverb doesn’t seem to include women but still, my plans for the weekend went out the window sometime on Friday. And I never managed to finish A LIFE TO KILL this weekend. In fact, I haven’t picked up since Friday due to every conceivable interruption known to, well, woman! And while we did manage to get out for a few hours on Saturday, we never got to go see Captain Marvel—as part of my birthday celebration. Anyway, I digress, the one shiny moment of the weekend was stopping by my local book shop to pick up a copy of, STAR OF THE NORTH by D.B. John, which I’d had on order. Another book I’m really excited to read: Star of the …

WWW Wednesday

Welcome to WWW Wednesday, a meme hosted by Taking on a World of Words in which you answer three simple questions about what we’re reading: What are you currently reading? What did you recently finish reading? What do you think you’ll read next? I am currently reading: I started CARDINAL: Forty Words For Sorrow by Giles Blunt yesterday and I’m already a third of the way through. This is both crime fiction and something of a police procedural, in which John Cardinal is the lead detective in a series of missing children cases that are, somehow, all linked. What’s more, the series is now a dramatic TV show here, in Canada, on CTV TV starring Billy Campbell in the lead role. What I just finished reading: I just recently finished reading and reviewed SHELL GAME by Sara Paretsky, which is the nineteenth installment of Paretsky’s very famous V. I. Warshawski series of detective novels. Check out my review for more information about the book and series in general. What I plan on reading next: I …
