Someone recently asked me, what rules do I try to live my life by? Good question. First and foremost and in no particular order:
- Do no harm
- Be kind at all times
- Ask yourself, is this helpful? Whatever this is
- Don’t put off difficult tasks
- Face your fears and understand them
- Try to learn new things
- Try to set yourself realistic goals
- Figure out your purpose
- Think before you react
- And always, always, listen first
Of course, this is just the basic list, there are more I could add but, these are been a good start. And you, what rules, if any, do you try to live your life by?

That’s a solid list of rules.
I never thought of this so I can’t really answer but one that popped into my head right now was “Stay curious” I think this is a big one for me.
In these uncertain times, sad to say, “stay cautious” sounds like good advice.
This is an amazing list of goals. Imagine what the world would be like if we all lived by these! I would just add one- set realistic goals, but also don’t be afraid to dream big and set big, scary goals as well.
Thank you, I try. And if everyone just tried, then maybe, just maybe, the world would be a better place for everyone.
And realistic goals is a great addition, as is not being afraid to dream big. We really should add that one in.
Can we distribute this nationwide? Some people need the help.
Ha! Ha! These rules were drilled into me by my parents, and esp. my grandmother. But I know what you mean …
I truly wish more people abided by these goals! It would help the world be a better place.
I try to live by the rule that we never really know what’s going on in people’s lives. So the person who may be rude to you at the store may have gotten terrible news or may be exhausted with caretaking an older relative or is stressed with work. Or they can just be a jerk, but that doesn’t mean we have to respond in kind.
I agree with you about never knowing what people are going through and that sometimes they’re curt because they’re having an awful day. I just wish everyone learnt to be tolerant of one another and not jump to conclusions so readily.
That’s a really good list to live by. I think I’d add, take care of yourself.
Oh, good point. We should all have that one on our list.
